Besides narrating habitual and ongoing actions in the past, the imperfect is also used a) to describe people, animals, weather, things, places, situations, sensations, feelings, emotions, moods, states of mind, events, scenes, attitudes, convictions, etc. in the past as well as b) to tell the time and state the age in the past.
a) La casa tenía cinco habitaciones.
The house had five rooms.

There were five police officers in the entrance of the building.
