Incorrect Uses of the Gerund
1.- Gerundio de posterioridad1.A. - Posterioridad: we can correct this mistake by changing the gerund for "y+indicative verb".
Incorrect: Se conocieron en la universidad, casándose después de graduarse.
Correct: Se conocieron en la universidad y se casaron después de graduarse.
They met in college and got married after they graduated.
1.B. - Efecto o Consecuencia: we can correct this mistake by changing the gerund for a consecutive connector (por lo cual, por tanto,...) and an indicative verb.
Incorrect: La furgoneta no tenía frenos, volcándose al tomar la curva.
Correct: La furgoneta no tenía frenos por lo cual se volcó al tomar la curva.
The van didn't have brakes so it knocked over when it took the curve.
2.- Gerundio sujeto con preposición: we can correct this mistake by using a circumstantial connector (mientras, cuando, como) or by placing an absolute gerund (without preposition) at the beginning of the sentence.
Incorrect: Con el profesor dando clase, no podemos salir del aula.
Correct: Mientras el profesor da clase, no podemos salir del aula.
or
Correct: Dando clase el profesor, no podemos salir del aula.
While the professor is teaching, we cannot leave the classroom.
3.- Gerundio sustituto de una oración de relative
3.A. - Adjetivo o especificativo: we can correct this mistake by changing the gerund for a defining sentence introduced by a relative pronoun (que+indicative verb).
Incorrect: Son muchas las llamadas pidiendo la repetición del programa.
Correct: Son muchas las llamadas que piden la repetición del programa.
There are many calls asking for the repetition of the TV show.
3.B. - Partitivo: we can correct this mistake by changing the gerund for a portative connector (de los/las cuales) and an indicative verb.
Incorrect: Hay una veintena de países hispanohablantes, siendo México el más poblado.
Correct: Hay una veintena de países hispanohablantes, de los cuales México es el más poblado.
There's about twenty Spanish-speaking countries, of which Mexico is the most populated.
