Verbs of Change - Part II

All of these change verbs express a total change, usually considered as a positive and a voluntary change. These kinds of verbs are related to "ser".

They are usually followed by an adjective or a noun of:

- profession : enfermero, cantante, artista...
- religion : cristiano, judío, católico...
- politics : republicano, socialista, demócrata...
- other adjectives or nouns that are related to a voluntary change

Hacerse

Cuando su equipo perdió la final de fútbol, Carlos decidió hacerse del equipo rival.
When his team lost the final, Carlos decided to become a fan of the opponent.

María se hizo enfermera para poder curar y ayudar a los enfermos.
Maria became a nurse so she could heel and help the sick.

Llegar a ser

Para llegar a ser astronauta, se necesita mucho entrenamiento.
To become an astronaut, you need a lot of training.

Marta llegó a ser la capitana del equipo de natación por sus buenas habilidades.
Marta became the swimming team leader for her good skills.

Convertirse en

El agua se convierte en hielo a los 0ºC y se convierte en vapor a los 100ºC.
Water becomes ice at 0ºC and it becomes vapor at100ºC.

Se convirtió en un personaje popular por los escándalos que rodeaban su vida.
He became famous because of the scandals he was involved in.
